About Academy

What is it

Over the last twenty-five years, The Message Trust has pioneered groundbreaking youth ministry. We're where The Tribe, LZ7 and Twelve24 all found their voice, and the place where Eden, our radical approach to urban mission, was planted.

We believe the good news of Jesus must be shared with truth and with tears; with creativity and compassion. If you do too, Message Academy could be for you.

Message Academy is a gap year of training in youth work, evangelism and creative arts, all designed to grow your character, your relationship with God and your effectiveness in sharing the gospel. So whether you feel called to the stage or the streets, to work in a school hall or the Albert Hall, to disciple in a youth cell or a prison cell, we'll prepare and equip you to make a difference for God.

What's involved?

During this gap year, what we offer is the opportunity to be immersed in a culture that creates and cultivates innovative mission. During the first four months, you will receive teaching and training (looking at topics ranging from 'The Heart of an Evangelist' to Old and New Testament), as well as workshops in Youth Work and Justice and practical tuition in your creative gifts. It’s an intensive time of investment in you that will spark your imagination to the possibilities for what God can do through you.

During the final six months, you will be encouraged to innovate your own ideas and outreach projects, as well as working alongside our existing teams to deliver the gospel in a variety of ways through schools, youth clubs and on the streets. Whether you are into music, drama, extreme sports or academic sparring, Manchester is the perfect place to hone your talents and gifts and put them into practice.

You will also get specific tuition in the creative arts where you can grow in your giftings and discover new ones. We also run workshops which are more discussion based in areas such as Youth Work and Justice, plus on-the-job training as you get stuck in with placements in youth clubs, outreach cafes and more.

Will I get a job/chance to work for The Message at the end?

We do not promise that anyone will automatically get a job with The Message after Message Academy finishes, but we are committed to helping you find the right way to outwork your gifts in ministry beyond the course. Sometimes that can mean working with The Message, but many students go on to be part of all kinds of ministry at the end of the course.

Can I get a part time job?

Message Academy is a full-time gap year so there will not be time to find paid work at the same time. It is advised that you try to raise all the money you will need before the start of the year or ask people to sponsor you on a monthly basis to cover your costs. (We have people who will be able to help you with fundraising if you need it.)

Core Elements

Morning teaching

Throughout the year we have biblical teaching on various themes from self, the Bible, evangelism, social action and the kingdom of God. Our aim is to not only equip you with the knowledge of the scriptures, but to empower you to be all you can in God through the promises in his Word. A good study Bible is essential for the course!

As well as that you will also receive tutoring on a creative art of your choice as well as development of how to engage with urban communities.

Placements can vary from detached work to youth clubs, street soccer or homeless outreach, helping on the Eden Buses or helping in your church activities.

Team time

Every week we make time for Message Academy team time. Morning prayers for all at The Message happen throughout the week, with special team prayers every Wednesday. Every week we also make space to talk and pray through all that’s going on. There are two residential trips throughout the year and the odd trip to McDonald’s all helping us stay together as a team and support one another through the course.
